Description Untitled Document

At this event, we will be covering two topics: Mapping Technology for the Municipal Tracking Market and Landmap: providing UK academia with a high quality spatial data download service.

This event has been sponsored by Landmap, (http://www.landmap.ac.uk) who are based at the University. Landmap is JISC-funded and provides web-based access to spatial data and learning materials for UK HE and FE.

Presentation 1: Mapping Technology for the Municipal Tracking Market
Speaker: Mark Wilcox, General Manager, Exactrak limited.
Synopsis: Its been a tough winter on the roads. Its also been a challenging one for local and highways authorities as they have struggled to keep the roads clear. This is where Exactrak comes in. The Exactrak real time vehicle tracking system is a web based tracking and monitoring system for specialist municipal and highways maintenance vehicles, including gritters, gully emptiers and refuse trucks. In his presentation, Mark will explain how Exactrak uses street-level Ordnance Survey Mapping combined with aerial topography layers together with vehicle telematics to provide customers with data such as cumulative weight collected, how many times the boom on a gully sucker has moved or how much salt a gritter has spread (and where and when). The presentation will last around 45 minutes and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

Presentation 2: Landmap: providing UK academia with a high quality spatial data download service.
Speaker: Gail Millin-Chalabi, Geodata Services Development Officer, Landmap
Synopsis: The Landmap Service provides UK academia with a high quality spatial data download service which is enhanced and supported by a range of learning materials. Landmap's key activities include the provision of Geospatial Support Services via the spatial helpdesk; research into and the development of new data delivery methods; KML for viewing data in Google Earth; the creation of Web Map Services (WMS) and Web Coverage Services (WCS) to improve interoperability between web services; applications of radar and optical data; dissemination and outreach by participating in key Remote Sensing and GIS events e.g. RSPSoc, GISRUK, FOSS4G and GeoForum and seeking out new learning materials from the academic community.

Afterwards: The whole event should be over by 6.30 and for those so inclined, we may pay a networking visit to nearby licences premises.
